This workshop, intended for therapists and clinicians, will examine legal and ethical issues when providing therapy in clinical practice with children and adolescents who have experienced childhood abuse, maltreatment, and trauma. The importance of having a proactive approach to understanding and addressing the complex interplay of legal and ethical issues in therapy will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on providing therapy that prevents harm to clients and reduces therapist liability. Issues including informed consent, confidentiality, child abuse reporting, receiving subpoenas, and multidisciplinary work will be examined. Through case examples, participants will grapple with many legal and ethical considerations when providing therapy in clinical practice with children and adolescents. The ambiguity and complexity of this work will be explored.
