Detective Montgomery County Sheriff's Office - Texas
This two-part, 150-minute training introduces professionals to the Integrated Cognitive-Behavioral Interviewing (ICBI) method and the Comprehensive Statement Evaluation Tool (CSET), two innovative approaches for conducting ethical, non-coercive interviews and analyzing offender statements.
ICBI emphasizes rapport-building, understanding cognitive and emotional processes, and avoiding coercion to elicit reliable, verifiable information. Participants will learn how to establish behavioral baselines, progressively introduce cognitive stress, and iteratively test narrative consistency while integrating evidence strategically. ICBI's trauma-informed approach minimizes risks of false confessions, ensuring ethically defensible and legally sound investigations.
The CSET tool provides a systematic framework for analyzing offender statements, focusing on evasion, minimization, rationalization, and narrative inconsistencies. Through practical exercises, attendees will explore how to identify deception markers, leverage cognitive dissonance, and validate information during and after interviews.
Combining ICBI and CSET, this training equips law enforcement, forensic interviewers, and child abuse investigators with advanced skills to enhance investigative accuracy and build stronger, evidence-based cases. Participants will gain practical experience through case studies, mock scenarios, and hands-on application, ensuring their ability to implement these techniques effectively in real-world settings.
