Program Director Native Child Advocacy Resource Center a Division of the National Native Child Trauma Center
Working in Indian Country requires individuals and organizations to think about how to engage respectfully and effectively with sovereign nations. We’ve identified three broad categories which are important to consider when partnering or developing CAC/MDTs: 1. Sovereignty. Which includes: Law, Policy, Governance and Jurisdiction. 2. Institutions. Which includes: Structures, Systems, Positions, and Processes. 3. Culture. Which includes: Values, Ways of Knowing and Doing. This session will unpack these three areas, giving concrete examples and providing participants with time to reflect on next steps and develop questions to learn from Native nations. The goal is not to create a checklist of “to dos” or broad guidelines, but to help participants develop a lens for how you approach MDT/CAC development and partnerships in Indian Country.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will develop an understanding of the three areas of consideration when engaging with Native Nations, which include Sovereignty, Institutions and Culture.
Participants will be able to identify important aspects in each area and how they impact relationship building with tribal partners.
Participants will leasrn to assess their own practices when working with Native Nations and develop next steps to improve partnerships when working with Indigenous people.
