FNP-BC, medical provider for abused or neglected children Partners with Families and Children
Child Torture within a family setting is often missed by professionals interacting with children. Medical professionals, CPS and law enforcement must recognize the signs of child torture to best intervene for the safety of the child. This presentation will review the latest research on child torture within a familial setting. Food restriction/starvation, isolation, spurning, intimidation, deprivation and repeated physical abuse all contribute to the emotional and physical abuse of the child, unrecognized by those outside of the immediate family. Early intervention is paramount to the recovery of the child and their long-term ability to function emotionally and intellectually. Each presenter will also review a particularly poignant case from their experiences over the years, highlighting the actual torture episodes that were missed by the community of caregivers, recounting the child's medical and social needs once the torture was recognized, reviewing the best treatment options for child torture victims, and sharing the outcome and recovery of these children. These case reviews describe child torture of an infant and a teen, demonstrating that torture can occur at any age or stage of development.
