Intrafamilial child torture is a form of child maltreatment that stands alone in its cruelty, severity, and polytrauma victimization. Through an illustrative case and subsequent didactic components, this multidisciplinary workshop aims to discuss intrafamilial child torture from a medical, criminal investigation, and statutory standpoint. We will review common torture methods, types of injuries and other medical findings, possible outcomes, and commonalities across families in which child torture occurs. We will also review the state of criminal statutes regarding child torture across the United States.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define intrafamilial child torture and various child and familial factors associated with it.
  • Iterate challenges in medically evaluating and investigating intrafamilial child torture.
  • Understand the statutory landscape regarding intrafamilial child torture in Texas and across the United States.
